Info

DAF has a hydraulic front-wheel drive in its portfolio that can be activated via a switch for trucks that cover most of their mileage on the road but sometimes have to drive off-road or in slippery conditions. This new “PXP” drive was developed together with Paul and is available for the DAF CF and XF tractor units.

Paul Xtra Power

Permanent all-wheel drive for a truck that only drives off-road occasionally usually means considerable costs in terms of acquisition, maintenance and fuel consumption. However, sometimes it is very important to have extra traction to navigate trenches, sandy roads, unpaved dumps and steep inclines. For difficult situations like this, DAF has a hydraulic front-wheel drive for the CF and XF 4×2 tractor units, which can be activated via a switch on the dashboard. If the vehicle detects that the driven wheels are slipping, PXP – “Paul Xtra Power” – is automatically activated. The greater the slip at the rear, the more traction the front wheels offer. The selectable front-wheel drive is available in the first four forward gears as well as in the first and second reverse gears. At speeds above 20 km / h (and/or in 5th gear and higher), PXP switches back to stand-by mode. The system turns on again at lower speeds and when necessary.

No compromises in terms of optimal usability

In order to enable the switchable front wheel drive, each front axle wheel hub is equipped with a hydraulic motor that generates a torque of no less than 6,435 Nm at a maximum system pressure of 360 bar. This ensures optimal performance, durability and reliability. A special feature is that the engines are driven by a hydraulic pump that is attached directly to the engine power take-off, which saves weight and space. In addition, the hydraulic pump can also drive components such as cranes, hook arms, stabilizers and container loader systems for maximum efficiency. This means that only one hydraulic tank is required, which also results in less weight and more space.
